More Than A Passing Thought

I expect August’s deathbed to be as it usually is–
blistering heat followed by cicadas’ incessant rattle

high in the crown of old sugar maples. I want to lie down
beneath the tree called Empire & listen to drowsy bees

hum their middling tune. This is how they’ve chaperoned
the orchard to star burst– glossy fruit born out of flowers.

Yet, no one shares an apple anymore, or knows for a fact
that the mahogany seeds stowed in secret chambers aren’t

the blueprint of apple in their mouths, but another apple,
one lost a generation ago, like first love, the one we think of

when we’re alone and full of forgetfulness or is it forgiveness?
